For many vegan and vegetarian guests traveling to Antalya, finding suitable food can sometimes be challenging. In particular, options can be quite limited for guests with specific dietary requirements, such as onion-free, garlic-free, or more specialized eating preferences. At Sisu Kitchen, we prioritize creating a culinary approach that respects different dietary lifestyles and aims to be as inclusive as possible. Recently, thanks especially to requests from our Jain and Swaminarayan guests, we have had the opportunity to get to know these dietary cultures more closely.

Jain individuals do not consume even root vegetables. The core principle is to avoid harming any living beings. Root vegetables are avoided because it is believed that harvesting them from the soil may cause harm to small organisms living in the ground.

In Jain dietary practice, certain foods may be avoided for religious and ethical reasons. This is based on the principle of ahimsa, which emphasizes not causing harm to any living being. For this reason, many Jain individuals avoid not only animal products but also certain vegetables and ingredients.
JAINISM AND NUTRITION

What is Jain Diet?

Jainism is an ancient belief system and way of life originating in India. At the core of Jain teachings is “ahimsa,” the principle of non-violence and not causing harm to any living being.

This philosophy influences not only daily life but also dietary habits in a very direct way.

For this reason, many Jain individuals prefer foods prepared in a way that avoids harming living beings as much as possible, and they follow a highly mindful and sensitive dietary practice.

Foods Commonly Avoided in the Jain Diet 🌿

In Jain dietary practice, certain foods may be avoided for religious and ethical reasons. This is based on the principle of ahimsa, which emphasizes not causing harm to any living being. For this reason, many Jain individuals avoid not only animal products but also certain vegetables and ingredients.

Foods commonly not consumed include:

  • Meat, chicken, fish, and seafood

  • Eggs and certain animal-derived ingredients

  • Onions, garlic, shallots, and leeks (allium vegetables)

  • Root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, radishes, and beets

  • Honey

  • In some cases, mushrooms and fermented products

  • Sauces and processed foods with unclear ingredients

In particular, root vegetables may be avoided because harvesting them from the soil is believed to potentially harm small organisms. Onions and garlic are also avoided in some Jain communities, as they are thought to overstimulate the mind and senses.
